Buying used items has never been more popular and millions of shoppers admit to feeling excited at buying second hand. However, it isn’t always straightforward and there can be some pitfalls when purchasing used cars AND PARTS. We outline what to look out for when buying second-hand parts.

Untested parts

‘Untested’ parts will be usually be sold as ‘faulty’ or suitable for ‘spares or repair’. It may be that these parts are functioning, but they will usually not have any option for a replacement or have any kind of money-back guarantee.

Parts are not as expected

When purchasing used parts, you do need to be particularly careful about what is and what isn’t included. it is important to check and be very clear about what is included with what you are purchasing.

The replacement part doesn’t fix an ongoing problem

When purchasing used parts, it is vital to ascertain first exactly what has caused the issue in the first place. For example, if the original problem with an engine was caused by a filter, replacing the starter motor will not stop the problem occurring again.

Buying the incorrect part

All too often, a customer sources a used part but ends up with the wrong part. The key here is to provide the make, model and registration number along with relevant information such as part number, fuel type, gearbox type etc.

If it is not a feasible option to purchase a second-hand part, or if you are struggling to find the right used part, new replacement parts can be purchased. For example, there are online stockists of Briggs and Stratton parts. Briggs and Stratton parts deliver optimum performance for Briggs & Stratton machinery.

Keep the above points in mind when purchasing parts for your engine. It may not always be possible to buy second hand, but if you are careful and know what to look for, you may be able to pick up a bargain part and if not, then you should purchase from a reputable manufacturer and supplier.
