Don’t try and be everything to everyone

Roger Walker September 28, 2018 Reviews Comments are off

Making the decision to start your own business can be likened to making the decision to jump from a plane with a parachute on your back or bungee jump for the first time. You know that in the end it will be worth it and will be a bit of the thrill but the journey to get there can be a bit terrifying and fraught with danger.

One thing I learnt early on in running my business was that I didn’t need to be a specialist in absolutely everything, even if I thought I did. It was ok to delegate things to other people and in the early days it was ok and actually incredibly important to find things that you could outsource to other people and other reliable companies so that you don’t become overwhelmed with the amount of work there is to do.

There were some key areas that I quickly learnt I could pass over to other companies and that actually in doing so I not only made more time for doing my actual day job, but I was less stressed too. Here are my top tips for the sorts of companies you may want to have close working relationships with from the start.

  • Same Day Courier Services – when you need documents or products delivered or collected regularly don’t waste your time carting things backwards and forwards to the post office, instead enlist the Same Day Courier Services from all about freight and take all of the hassle away and have peace of mind knowing that your items will be delivered in a timely, safe and professional manner. I am so glad I used them for all of my important documentation. No more worries about items being lost in the post!

  • Accountancy and Bookkeeping – whilst I always retained control of the day to day running of my finances and the issuing of invoices I actually realised that it was taking up a large proportion of my time and so moved my financial data across to a company who could not only deal with my year end accounts and VAT returns but that could also deal with any record keeping requirements and reconcile my bank statements and accountancy files on a regular basis for me.
  • Website – this was the biggest headache solver for me. I wanted to retain control of the design of my website and so made the slightly crazy decision to create it myself, what happened was I procrastinated for ages on it and never actually got around to sorting out a fully optimised website. After a quick call to a great web design agency they start my site from scratch and had it completed and working in no time at all.
