Managers and business owners are under increasing pressure not only to ensure that they are providing good, cost-efficient services to their customers but also that they look after and maintain the health of their staff.
Employees are often required to juggle multiple tasks and to work more efficiently, which can have a detrimental impact on mental health. Charities such as MIND have identified that workplace challenges are leading to increasing mental illness when boundaries are not established.

Ways to establish professional boundaries

One of the key ways that boundaries can be set both by employees and their managers is consistent open communication. It is extremely helpful to hold regular meetings to ensure that each member of the team has a balanced workload, takes their full allocation of time off and holidays and is completely clear about what is expected of them.

Mental health training courses in Plymouth also offer a formal opportunity for staff at all levels to gain a greater understanding of techniques of delegation and boundary-setting.

Mental health training to support staff

Another important aspect of the work of managers is to consider options such as mental health training courses Plymouth or elsewhere in the UK. By taking part in such training, managers can gain the skills to support their staff and reduce absences due to mental illness.

As well as the need to understand mental health, there is a positive obligation on employers to ensure that they take into account the health and safety of their staff, which includes mental as well as physical health. Establishing boundaries and maintaining a good work-life balance is the role of all individuals. Still, there is an onus on employers to provide training and have good policies in place to support such training.
