What are the five main aims of first aid?

First aid is the immediate help that is given to someone who is injured or suddenly ill. Knowing the main aims of first aid can make a big difference in an emergency. Here are the five key goals that guide first aid practice.

1. Preserving Life

The first and most important aim of first aid is to preserve life. This means trying to keep the injured person alive – perhaps through performing CPR, stopping severe bleeding, or making sure that the person’s airway is clear.

If you’d like to learn more about how to save a life, why not try some emergency first aid training courses, such as those at www.tidaltraining.co.uk/emergency-first-aid-training-courses, for practical, hands-on experience.

2. Promoting Recovery

First aid also focuses on promoting recovery. Simple steps, such as cleaning and dressing a wound, helping someone stay calm, or supporting an injured limb, can improve the chances of a good recovery.

3. Preventing Deterioration

Another key aim of first aid is preventing deterioration. First aid helps to stop the victim’s condition from becoming worse. For example, keeping a person warm, avoiding unnecessary movement, or treating shock can prevent complications.

4. Relieving Pain

Relieving pain is also an important goal. First aid can include comfort measures such as applying ice to a sprain or elevating an injured limb.

5. Protecting the Unconscious

Finally, protecting the unconscious is vital. If a person is unconscious, first aid makes sure they are placed in a safe position, like the recovery position, to keep their airway clear and prevent choking.
