Five ways to cut your home’s energy bills

Jessica Hanshaw June 26, 2024 Home Improvement Comments are off

The cost of electricity and gas is a big concern for many homeowners; however, there are things you can do to reduce your energy bills. Let’s explore five ways to cut your bills and save energy.

1. Be efficient when using your appliances

Everybody needs to use appliances, such as washing machines, fridge freezers, and dishwashers, but there are ways of using them more efficiently. Try washing at 30 degrees instead of 40, and always make sure your washing machine is full rather than washing halfloads. Try to dry laundry outside when possible, rather than using a tumble drier, and clean your machine frequently so it works more efficiently. If your appliances have eco settings, use these to save money.

  1. Add insulation

Adding insulation can be the most effective way of saving money. Loft insulation or cavity wall insulation, according to the Energy Saving Trust, can pay for itself many times over and result in substantial savings on your energy bills.

  2. Draught Proof your home

If you have gaps around your doors and windows, you could be losing heat; in turn, you could be increasing your heating bills. To prevent draughts from getting in around your home, install draught proof strips around your windows and doors. You should also check your chimney, fireplace, and loft hatch for draughts.

    4. Reduce your hot water usage

Heating your hot water is a year-round expense but remember to set your boiler to only heat the hot water you need. Also, try fitting an eco-showerhead or setting a shower timer to limit how much hot water you use. Solar panels Gloucester from a specialist such as https://gsmlimited.com/services/solar-panels/gloucester are another way to reduce your bills, although there is an upfront cost.

    5. Invest in smart technology

Smart thermostats can let you control your heating and hot water remotely, and you can adjust the settings so that the heating only comes on if a room reaches a certain temperature. The initial outlay of smart technology can be expensive, but the savings you can make will cover the costs over time.
