They inspect construction sites, check that the work is following plans correctly, and monitor progress. If they find any defects, they make recommendations on how to put them right.

Other types of inspectors

In addition to an overall building inspector, specialist inspectors will inspect other aspects of the construction, including plumbing, electrical, and mechanical. Again, they will ensure any work carried out complies with regulations and industry codes.

Public works inspectors are responsible for looking at concrete. They will check the digging and filling and observe the concrete mixing and materials used. Special inspectors also look at certain materials in greater detail, such as fabrication and placement.

The role of a housing inspector is to inspect existing buildings, checking for any violations of health and safety and the general condition of the building.

Fire marshal

Responsible for the development of a building’s fire prevention measures that meet codes and standards, fire marshals will also ensure a building site complies with fire safety regulations. This includes evacuation and fire prevention.
