What is electroless plating?

Jessica Hanshaw September 20, 2025 Home Improvement Comments are off

Sometimes referred to as autocatalytic plating, electroless plating is a chemical process in which a metal coating is applied to a product in order to strengthen it and protect it from corrosion. It is a process that works extremely well on products of all shapes and sizes, including irregular ones, leaving a uniform finish that enhances both aesthetic appeal and natural properties.

How is electroless plating performed?

The product that is to be plated is immersed in a chemical bath. An electroless nickel coating is applied via an auto-catalytic reaction, which causes the metal ions in the bath to deposit themselves as a solid coating upon the immersed product.

How is electroless plating different from electroplating?

While both processes involve the use of a chemical bath, with electroless plating, no electric current is required to bind the metal coating to the product. Instead, it occurs as a result of a chemical reaction. Surface coating specialists such as https://www.poeton.co.uk/surface-treatments/plating/electroless-nickel-plating can advise on which process is best suited to your individual needs.

Benefits of electroless plating

The primary benefit of electroless plating is that it deposits a uniform layer across the entire surface of the treated product, extending its lifetime by increasing its resistance to wear and corrosion. This reduces the in-service cost of ownership and the product typically remains in a recyclable condition at end of life, reducing wastage and minimising the environmental cost of production.

In conclusion

Electroless plating does not require the use of electricity to apply a protective coating, making it a safe and effective alternative to electroplating.
