What does it mean to be a flight attendant?

The profession of a flight attendant, also known as a flight attendant or TCP is one of the most promising career paths today. Therefore, it is a great opportunity to find a job with good pay and job stability. Working in the aeronautical sector has multiple advantages since it will not only give you the opportunity to meet and deal with people but also to explore the world while traveling or enjoy a multitude of services and discounts.

But what does being a flight attendant consist of? The job performed by the flight attendant is to ensure the safety, care, and comfort of all passengers of an airline. In addition to the function performed during the flight, the flight attendants are in charge of inspecting and checking the plane before and after each journey.

What are the requirements to be a flight attendant?

Be of age

The first requirement to be able to access the flight attendant position is to be over 18 years of age since being of legal age is strictly necessary. However, the studies can be completed before being of legal age if required. Likewise, the maximum age to access the profession is 35 years, although it is a requirement that is less and less contemplated in certain airlines.

Languages

If we talk about the essential requirements to be a flight attendant, surely this comes to mind: mastering languages. English is the basic language to be able to work as an assistant since it is considered the international language par excellence and must be used to communicate both with passengers and the rest of the crew. However, in addition to English, the more languages ​​you know and know how to defend, the better it will be when presenting your candidacy to any airline and will allow you to obtain a much more attractive profile and prepared to work as a TCP.

Availability of mobility at a geographical level

It would not make sense to be a flight attendant if you do not want to travel, however, in case it is not clear, mobility at a geographical level is essential to be able to be a flight attendant. Being available to travel or live close to the base can improve your resume when accessing this job.

Recommended minimum height

Having a minimum height is essential to be able to work as a stewardess or flight attendant, taking into account the measurements of the plane and that emergency and rescue materials are usually located in the highest part of the plane. Thus, to guarantee the effectiveness of the attendants in emergency situations and for safety reasons, the recommended height to work as a flight attendant is 1.58m for women and 1.68m for men.

To know how to swim

Another of the indisputable requirements to perform the role of a flight attendant is knowing how to swim. Since the figure of the stewardess must keep passengers safe during the flight, her notions must include theoretical and practical knowledge about emergencies, rescue and salvage. Thus, to pass the entrance tests to practice as a TCP you must pass swimming tests, specifically, know how to swim 100 meters in 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

Medical certificate

Being in good health is essential to access any job. In the case of the TCP, the airlines usually request the aeronautical medical certificate, a simple procedure to carry out that is used to certify that you do not suffer from any health problem that prevents you from carrying out this professional activity.

Minimum studies

Finally, to be able to work as a flight attendant or stewardess it is essential to have minimum studies (ESO), as well as specific qualifications such as the Official Cabin Crew Certificate.

What studies are needed to be a flight attendant

In addition to the essential requirements that we have seen in the previous section, in order to access a flight attendant position it is necessary to have basic and specific studies. Although there is no flight attendant career as such, the minimum studies of ESO or equivalent at an international level must be accredited. But, in addition, if you accredit higher education such as high school, training cycles, or university degrees related to aeronautics, you will add points during the selection process. Likewise, the level of spoken English must be accredited.

But, in addition to basic studies, to be able to work as a flight attendant it is essential to obtain the official TCP (Cabin Crew) certificate at an aeronautical school. Through this course you will obtain practical and theoretical preparation for the basic aspects of this profession: from aviation history to first aid or languages. The flight attendant course must be approved and will allow you to take off in your professional career as a flight attendant.
