Is copper or plastic better for plumbing?

Jessica Hanshaw October 17, 2024 Home Improvement Comments are off

The majority of plumbing tasks will require installing or replacing pipes; therefore, a key decision is which type of pipes to use: copper or plastic. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

Copper pipes

Copper piping has been used in plumbing systems for thousands of years; for example, it was used by the Ancient Egyptians to transport water

Advantages of copper pipes for plumbing

1. Durability: copper pipes are known for their long-lasting nature. They often last more than 50 years.

2. Corrosion resistance: copper doesn’t rust or corrode.

3. Flexibility: copper pipes are lightweight and malleable. They can be adapted to fit various spaces and applications; additionally, copper pipes can be joined together fairly easily.

When it comes to joining copper pipe, the options include welding/brazing, soldering, and using specialist fittings. There are a number of firms that make special fittings for this purpose; what’s more, a number of pipeline merchants, such as https://watkinspowis.co.uk/products/copper-pipe-fittings-and-press-systems/, have useful online resources for your perusal.

4. Safe for drinking water: copper has several antimicrobial properties, including the ability to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. This means it is safe for use in drinking water systems.

5. Recyclability: copper can be recycled and reused. Even when the pipes need replacing, the material won’t be wasted.

Disadvantages of copper pipes for plumbing

The main downsides to using copper pipes are that they are more expensive, at least initially, and may be susceptible to freeze damage, although this can be mitigated through insulation.

Plastic pipes for plumbing

A more recent alternative to copper, plastic pipes are popular because they are less expensive, lightweight and flexible, offer good resistance to corrosion, and are safe for drinking water systems as long as they are WRAS approved.

The downsides are that they are less long-lasting, harder to recycle, and they are less able to handle high temperatures.

In summary, both copper and plastic pipes have their advantages and disadvantages. Which you opt for should be based on the intended use, your budget, and other factors you deem important.
