day of delivery

When the end of pregnancy approaches, we are all very nervous. We hope that the day of delivery arrives at the earliest. After you have everything ready at home, it is time to start organizing what you will carry in your suitcase on the day of the birth.

Of course, you will find on the internet a diversity of lists, some more detailed than others, about what you should include in the suitcase on the day of delivery. The important thing is that you apply common sense when preparing your luggage.

If all goes well, as expected from a pregnancy that has developed normally, you should not stay in the hospital for more than 2 or 3 days. So, be careful when organizing your luggage, do not empty your closet or the baby’s closet!

What should the suitcase on the day of delivery include?

day of delivery

In the work of organizing the suitcase of the day of delivery, it is important that values that you can not carry a very extended baggage in many bags or suitcases. Ideally, you can identify what each suitcase contains. For example, if you need to look for baby’s diapers, you know where they are, and with all the things you will take to the hospital.

These are days of great nervousness, so avoid the possibility of losing patience looking for something in a myriad of suitcases. You can organize your luggage according to this list that we propose.

1. Documents of interest

In an easy-access pocket of the suitcase, place a folder or folder with your most important documents. You can take the originals and a copy, in case you must deliver it at some time:

  • Personal identification
  • Insurance policy
  • Hospital access documents
  • Medical recipes if you took any medication during pregnancy.
  • Last tests performed (blood values, ultrasound or studies, among others).

2. Mom’s clothes

Although after the birth of the baby, you lost a good portion of the kilos you gained during pregnancy, it is not that you are going to stay the same as you were before getting pregnant. You need to wear comfortable and loose clothing.

If you have a C-section, you will most likely need help getting dressed, so wear clothes that are easy to put on and take off:

  • Robes or pajamas that open in front.
  • High cut underwear (in case you have a cesarean, so that the elastic is not over the incision).
  • Breastfeeding bras or bras one or two sizes larger than usual. Although not breastfeeding, milk will rise to your breasts, and you will not be able to wear anything tight.
  • Stockings (in case it’s cold).
  • Towel after the bath.
  • Clothes that you are going to leave the hospital with.
  • Slippers to take your first steps after childbirth and plastic sandals to bathe.

3. Baby clothes

It is important that the baby’s clothes are in the same suitcase on the day of delivery. Avoid watering what you carry for the baby in different bags. Surely it will be your partner or companion who will supply the baby’s clothes to the hospital staff, so the easier it is to locate, the better.

  • Mamluks or monkeys.
  • Socks.
  • Caps.
  • Small blankets.
  • T-shirts or guardacamisas.
  • Cloth diapers to place between your baby and those who are going to visit them and want to load it.
  • Towel.
  • A change of clothes to leave the hospital.
  • If you’re using shipper or carrier, you must take.

Among the things you do not need to take with the baby are wet towels (leave them only for when they leave the house), or gloves or mittens. Your baby will often hold her hands to her mouth, just as she did countless times in the womb. It is a natural reflection.

4. Personal use products for mom

Although some hospitals give you some products for personal use, bring your own so that you feel more comfortable. Especially with regard to intimate hygiene, it is better than you wear the brands of your preference.

  • Sanitary or clinical towels. Bleeding is frequent after childbirth, you can also suffer from a little urinary incontinence.
  • Shampoo, conditioner and any other product you usually use to keep your hair in order.
  • You will surely receive visits from many relatives and friends. Although motherhood will give you a special shine, there is no more a touch of gloss on the lips, a mask of eyelashes and blush for the cheeks.
  • Moisturizing cream for the body and face, make-up remover.
  • Deodorant.
  • Toothpaste or mouthwash.

5. Baby’s personal use products

Of course, the first ones that you should include in the suitcase are the disposable diapers for your baby. The recommendation is the same as with clothes: order everything in the same bag or suitcase.

It takes 20 to 24 disposable diapers, it’s a good amount. It also carries airtight bags to deliver diapers or baby clothes to hospital staff. You should also include moisturizing cream for baby’s skin and antiparasitic cream or protective cream.

6. Thankful details or memories

Prepare some bags, jars or small boxes with cards with the name of your baby to thank the visit of those who went to meet him. This thank-you memory can include cookies, chocolates or nuts.

They are a nice detail to give to those who accompany you in the days at the hospital, for your other children (if you have them) or for other family members and friends who want to welcome your little one.
