How to make your home more secure

Securing your home can save you a lot of stress, heartache, and financial loss. Thefts and vandalism can be expensive and distressing, but there are things you can do to reduce the chance of them happening.

Secure outbuildings

Protecting outbuildings and gardens can prevent items from being stolen and can also reduce access to tools, for example, that can be used to get into the main building. Protecting your garden will make your property safer overall.

No hiding place

Keeping hedges, walls, and fences at the front low can remove hiding places for criminals. The likes of wrought iron railings from specialist providers such as donkeywellforge.co.uk/what-we-make/iron-gates-railings can be a good alternative to solid walls and bushes, offering security without creating screening for thieves or vandals.

Secure gates

Gates can really increase the security of a property. Make sure that they are kept locked at all times. This is especially true for side and rear gates, as you don’t want to give criminals the opportunity to enter your property and get inside without being seen.

Think about the rear

When it comes to the side and rear of your property, think about creating high boundaries that are difficult to get past. You could use the likes of wrought iron railings, spiky defensive plants, or trellis to raise the height. Try to have walls, fences, or hedges at least 1.8 meters tall, and add plants or trellis to make climbing over even more difficult.

Other security solutions

Gravel paths and driveways can create noise, and security lighting can improve visibility, two things that criminals dislike. A burglar alarm is another major deterrent, both for your home and any outbuildings, if they contain anything valuable.

Don’t leave valuable items in full view or lying around outside. Think about open windows and doors during the summer months – burglars can get inside in seconds, so remember to close windows and doors, even if you are just going into the garden or upstairs for a while.
