In the case of engineered wood flooring, grade is about appearance not strength. While prime boards are versatile, not all character and rustic pieces make sense in every home.
Prime grade (clean and consistent)
The result is a more consistent look. You’ll usually see:
fewer knots
less colour variation
a smoother, more finished look
This is one floor to make your modern interior or room feel subdued and minimalist. The downside? While some people may appreciate this lack of natural variation, it can be a little too perfect if you are an aficionado.
Character grade (natural but balanced)
In between we have character grade. Expect:
visible grain patterns
some knots and colour variation
a more natural, lived-in feel
Although it is soft, so marks and scars blend in easily over time making it relatively less precious. Ideal for a more wholesome family home. For Engineered Wood Flooring, visit irwintiles.ie/wooden-flooring/engineered-wood-flooring
Rustic grade (full of features)
With rustics boards it picks up all the natural characteristics of a specific timber. You’ll often get:
larger knots
stronger colour changes
mineral streaks and filled splits
As a rule of thumb, rustic is great for period properties, appealing cottages or farmhouse styles and if you like the idea that your floor has personality. But you have to understand what it is that you’re buying: those imperfections are the entire point.
Quick tip before you choose
Get them to show you boards from several packs, not just a single sample. Grade can be different from one end of the room to another, and there is a benefit in seeing it all together since you get a better idea how your floor will look across an entire space.
