What are the different types of plumbing pipes?

Jessica Hanshaw August 10, 2024 Home Improvement Comments are off

There are a number of different types of plumbing pipes available – each of which has different pros and cons. Some of the most common types are outlined below.

Copper Pipes

Copper pipes have been the gold standard in plumbing for many years. They offer excellent durability, corrosion and heat resistance, flexibility and recyclability. Copper pipes are commonly found in water supply lines, plumbing fixtures and heating systems.

Copper pipe can be joined using soldering or special compression fittings. There are a number of specialist suppliers of copper pipe fittings such as https://watkinspowis.co.uk/products/copper-pipe-fittings-and-press-systems/ who have useful online resources.

Cross-Linked Polyethylene (PEX) Pipes

PEX pipes have become a common sight in recent years. They are highly flexible (can be bent/curved), affordable, freeze-resistant, durable, easy to install and have natural sound-dampening properties. They are a popular choice for modern plumbing systems.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pipes

These are often used for drains and systems involving non-potable water. They are suitable for various plumbing needs thanks to the fact they are durable, inexpensive, lightweight and resistant to chemicals. However, they are not suitable for hot water applications.

Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) Pipes

CPVC pipes are actually a sub-type of PVC pipes. The difference is that they have been treated with chlorine in order to increase their temperature resistance. This means that they can be used for hot water applications in residential or commercial applications.

As well as enhanced temperature resistance, CPVC pipes are a cost-effective option that offers corrosion resistance, durability and simple installation.

Galvanised Iron Pipes

Galvanised iron pipes used to be a popular choice but have now been overtaken by other types. Whilst they are strong, corrosion-resistant and durable, they are also heavy, inflexible and not recommended for potable water systems.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Pipes

These are made from a special thermoplastic polymer. They are durable, strong yet lightweight, chemical-resistant and easy to install. They are also non-toxic.

Due to having a lower temperature resistance than copper or CPVC, they are primarily used for drainage systems or cold water supply.
