What is an emergency call button?

An emergency call button is a small device you press to request help. When pressed, the button sends a signal to someone who can respond, such as a family member, a staff member, or an emergency team. These buttons are often used by seniors, people with disabilities, and anyone at risk of falling or needing emergency help.

Main components of a call button system

To set up a call button, you need several parts working together:

  1. Signal sender

This is the button you press. It may be worn as a necklace, clipped to clothing, or placed on a wall. When pressed, it sends a message for help.

  1. Receiver unit

This unit receives the signal from the button. Whether a device at home or in a care home, it picks up the message and acts on it.

  1. Emergency contact

Once the message is received, it is passed on to someone who can help.

  1. Control programs or apps

These are computer programs or phone apps that help manage the system. They track when a call button is pressed and who responds.

  1. Emergency responders

These are the people who show up if necessary, such as ambulance teams and paramedics.

How to set the call button up

  1. Choose the right call button

Pick a call button that suits the user’s needs; for example, some are waterproof, some are wireless, and some are wearable. Think about where and how the button will be used. Buttons are available from companies such as https://www.dinggly.com/products/wireless-call-buttons.

  1. Install the receiver

Plug in or mount the receiving unit. It should be able to clearly receive the signal, so test to ensure it is in range of the button. Link the system to a phone, staff office, or emergency centre.

  1. Test the system

Always test the system before using it. Press the button to see whether the alert goes through.
